Do I Need a Filling?
Dr. Fairweather will diagnose the need for a dental filling using several different techniques:
• A visual dental exam
• DIAGNOdent
• Digital X-rays
If the decay (or cavity) involves less than 50% of the healthy tooth, a filling may be a good option.
If the decayed area of your tooth is not very severe or extensive, it usually can be repaired using air abrasion alone, with no need for local anesthetic. If the decay (cavity) is more extensive, Dr. Fairweather will use a combination of air abrasion and a traditional drill.
Will My Filling Be White or Tooth-colored?
The vast majority of fillings done at Better Image Dentistry are tooth-colored. Today’s tooth-colored restorations are made from a material called composite, which offers the advantages of great strength, adhesion to the tooth, and a natural-looking appearance.
Is Dental Amalgam Ever Used?
Dental amalgam is very rarely used for fillings – only about four to five fillings a year). The only reason your dentist may choose to use amalgam is if it is impossible to keep the tooth with the filling dry during placement of the filling (composite filling must be kept completely dry during the procedure).
