There are many reasons that superficial white, brown, gray, or orange spots may appear on the surface of your teeth: heredity, cigarettes, coffee, tea, red wine or other foods and beverages. If you took the drug tetracycline as a child, or your mother took it during pregnancy, you may have stains that range from yellow to orange to brown to blue-gray. (Tetracycline ingested between the ages of four months prior to birth to nine months after birth can often affect primary teeth; if taken during the first nine years of life, tetracycline can affect permanent teeth with superficial spotting.)

Stain removal can be achieved with a variety of cosmetic dental procedures that that use whitening to remove superficial stains from teeth or veneers or crowns to cover the discoloration. What Should I Expect if I Have Stains Removed from My Teeth?

If your teeth are superficially stained from smoking, coffee or tea, our hygienist can usually remove them at your hygiene visit. If you have more significant or deep staining on your teeth, Dr. Fairweather will evaluate your specific situation and recommend one or more of the following methods to remove the stains from your teeth:

 

  • Small restorations can eliminate deeper stains or discolorations on your teeth.
  • Veneers/bonding can be used to remove multiple or very deep discolorations of the teeth. Veneers are thin, custom-made pieces of porcelain which are bonded to the surfaces of the teeth to cover the stains, providing an excellent appearance and many years of beauty and function.
  • Whitening, using BriteSmile or at-home whitening.
