What Are Porcelain Veneers and Bonding?

  • Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to teeth to improve their color, shape and/or length. In general, a veneer covers only the front and top of a tooth.   • Bonding is the process by which your dentist places a material called resin on your teeth, sculpts it to the desired shape, and then hardens it with a special high-intensity light. What Should I Expect if I Have Porcelain Veneers and Bonding?

  • Porcelain veneers: During your first appointment, Dr. Fairweather will shape the teeth and take impressions to create working models of your mouth. We will use those models to accurately craft your veneers to fit the prepared teeth.

During your second appointment, we will clean and polish your prepared teeth, then use an adhesive to bond the veneers to your teeth. Dr. Fairweather will use a safe, high-intensity light to harden the adhesive so that the veneers have a strong bond to your teeth.

  • Bonding: Usually, bonding requires just one appointment. First, Dr. Fairweather will prepare your teeth and apply a conditioning gel. Next, he will place the resin on the teeth to be restored, sculpt it to the desired shape, and use a safe, high-intensity light to harden it.
