Root Canal

What Is a Root Canal?

The “root canal” refers to the area inside the tooth that contains the pulp tissue (nerves, arteries, and veins). Nerve tissue runs through the tooth’s roots through the root canals, which lead into the tooth’s pulp chamber.

When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected, root canal therapy is necessary to save the tooth. During root canal therapy, the dentist removes the nerves, arteries, and veins that supply the tooth with feeling. Only the material inside the tooth is removed, so the roots and other hard structures of the tooth are not affected.

Do I Need a Root Canal (Endodontic Therapy)?

If one of your teeth is infected and requires dental treatment, you may experience any or all of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling or pain
  • Hot or cold sensitivity
  • Bad taste in your mouth

However, you may experience no symptoms at all. Instead, the infection may be discovered by Dr. Fairweather at your regular dental checkup. As the infection in a tooth grows, pus inside the canal escapes at the root tip and makes deep holes in the bone that supports the tooth. This is known as an abscess.

There are several reasons you may experience an infections in a tooth. These include:

  • Deep cavities (the most common reason for a root canal)
  • Periodontal problems
  • Injury or trauma to the tooth
  • Unknown reasons

An infected tooth will never heal on its own. As it gets worse, the tooth will continue to be a source of infection that puts your immune system under stress – and that can affect your entire body.

What Should I Expect if I Need a Root Canal?

If Dr. Fairweather determines that root canal therapy is necessary to repair and save your tooth, he will clean out the tooth, then seal and fill it. He will use a local anesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. After the root canal is complete, he may place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect it and restore it to full function.

Dr. Fairweather will discuss the best options for your root canal therapy with you and answer any questions you may have.
